Re-appointment of Valeria Ronzitti as SGI Europe General Secretary

Today [17 June 2021], the General Assembly of SGI Europe has re-appointed unanimously Valeria Ronzitti as General Secretary, for a 5-year mandate.

During her speech to present the priorities for the next 5 years, Ms Ronzitti called for services of general interest to take full ownership of the new paradigm at EU level:

“Over the last 3 years, our calls for a new paradigm for SGIs have been heard louder and louder. The response to the COVID-19 was a revealing moment, which clearly highlighted the central role SGIs are playing on a day-to-day basis. SGIs were present from the start, stretching their capacities in answering to the emergency, contributing to the exit and shaping the recovery strategy. The EU response was, eventually, focused on investments to build up resilience, in line with everything SGI Europe has been calling for years.”

“Now, we need to fiercely take “ownership” of this new paradigm. It is the moment to ensure that, both at EU and at national level, SGI Europe and our members are recognised for their essential role in the EU social market economy. SGIs are the backbone of our social model.”

“When implementing the new paradigm around investments and resilience, it is of prime importance for SGIs to be featured at the top of the picture. Going beyond the Next Generation EU and the Recovery and Resilience Facility, this ambition need to be further translated into proposals where SGI Europe will need to play an active role. It will involve proactivity on files which will aim at setting the table for a new EU economic governance and growth model, including a review of the Stability and Growth Pact and promoting a vision of economic growth which goes beyond the GDP.”

General Secretary of SGI Europe since 2012, Ms Ronzitti’s renewed mandate will run until 2026.
